The pod of orcas trapped in the drift ice has disappeared from Rausu town.

There have been reports that a pod of killer whales trapped in drift ice off Rausu Town, Hokkaido, has disappeared. Their existence was first confirmed on the morning of February 6th, when about 15 killer whales were seen surrounded by drift ice, unable to move.

Killer whales are mammals and breathe through their blowholes. Therefore, when they are surrounded by ice, they cannot breathe enough, threatening their lives. However, the marine creatures were not found when a search was conducted from land in the same area on the morning of February 7th, the day after.

Normally, killer whales are smart predators of the sea, always calm and meticulous. Why such clever killer whales were trapped in sea ice, however, is unknown.

This information was reported to Rausu Town around 8:30 a.m. on February 6th, and the killer whales surrounded by drift ice could be observed from a point about 1 kilometer from the coast. According to the reporter, there were also young whales among them.

There is a possibility that about 10 killer whales escaped from the sea ice, according to a staff member of Rausu Town. To support this, no killer whales were seen in the search conducted again on the morning of February 7th.

Detailed investigations are being conducted on this incident, but at this stage, the current situation of the killer whales and the reason why they left are not confirmed.
