Shimizu S-Pulse Misses Automatic Promotion to J1, Final Round of Intense J2 League

In the midst of the fierce battle of the Meiji Yasuda Life J2 League, one of the particularly watched clubs was Shimizu S-Pulse. The final round of the J2 League season took place on November 12th, with each club competing for automatic promotion to J1.

Shimizu S-Pulse held the advantage of being in 2nd place, within the automatic promotion zone to J1, but faced 17th-placed Mito Hollyhock away in the final round. The game was a suspenseful turnaround, with Shimizu S-Pulse conceding first in the second half. However, thanks to the efforts of forward Tiago Santana, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, in another match held the same day, Jubilo Iwata won 2-1 away against Tochigi SC. As a result, Jubilo Iwata ultimately overtook Shimizu S-Pulse in points.

Based on this, this tournament now has a system where a playoff is conducted by the teams that ranked 3-6 in the Meiji Yasuda Life J2 League annual ranking this year, with the winning club being promoted to J1. However, due to their draw against Mito Hollyhock, Shimizu S-Pulse is now forced to face an even more grueling fight instead of automatic promotion.

It should be noted that the team to be automatically promoted (2nd place) to the Meiji Yasuda Life J1 League had already been decided as FC Machida Zelvia.

For the 2023 season of the Meiji Yasuda Life J2 League, the road to J1 seems to be tough. While the results of the final round will influence how each club fights next season, for football fans, it’s expected to become a spectacle to witness such fierce battles.
