End of an Era: Pro Bowl Tight End Zach Ertz Waived by Arizona Cardinals Amid Injury Struggles, Eyes Potential Free Agency

Zach Ertz, the three-time Pro Bowl tight end, has ended a brief tenure with the Arizona Cardinals, as confirmed by his former teammate JJ Watt on CBS’s NFL Today. Ertz, whose time at the Cardinals was plagued by a quad injury leading to an Injured Reserve status and five missed games, was waived by the team at Ertz’s request. The team and tight end mutually agreed to part ways, giving Ertz an opportunity to potentially join a contending team.

Given the move late in the season, Ertz must now navigate the obstacle of waivers. The procedure of waivers involves each of the 32 clubs in the NFL having the chance to claim the veteran tight end’s contract. Failing a successful claim, Ertz will become a free agent.

While with the Cardinals, Ertz was a recognizable figure on the team. His departure was confirmed by Watt via Twitter who alluded to his retirement and ‘trying new things’. Watt’s tweets broke the news before it was further corroborated by NFL Network and ESPN.
