Parent and child killed in a traffic accident in Suginami District, Tokyo: Struck by a car reversing

A tragic traffic accident occurred on the evening of the 26th in Kōtōhigashi, Suginami ward, Tokyo. Chihiro Sugimoto, a 43-year-old illustrator, and her daughter, Nagi, a 6-year-old first-grader, were struck by a car while walking on the sidewalk. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, the accident happened around 5:05 PM. Sugimoto and Nagi were walking on the sidewalk of Inokashira Street when a car backing out from a nearby auto repair shop reportedly hit them.

The police are investigating this accident and have questioned the self-proclaimed auto mechanic who was driving the car, suspect Kohta Urushihara (50), on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injury.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Kōtōhigashi Station, it has been confirmed that Sugimoto and Nagi were a mother and daughter living nearby.
