Magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, multiple injuries and reports of collapsed residences
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred in the Aksu region of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the early hours of the 23rd. The specific time of occurrence is reported to be around 3:10 am Japan time. The epicenter is said to be located in the border area with Kyrgyzstan.
According to reports by China’s state-run central television and other media, as a result of this earthquake, several people have been confirmed injured, and damage such as collapsed residential buildings has been reported. There are also reports that rescue operations are ongoing at the site.
Furthermore, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has also confirmed this earthquake, clearly indicating the epicenter near China. However, according to the Meteorological Agency, the impact of tsunamis on Japan due to this earthquake is not expected.
