Magnitude 7.6 Earthquake Strikes Philippines, Tsunami Detected in Japan – Tsunami Advisory Issued for Multiple Prefectures

A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 occurred off the coast of Mindanao Island, Philippines, in the early hours of the 2nd, and a tsunami was observed. The resultant tsunami reached Japan and a maximum height of 40 cm was observed on Hachijojima Island. Moreover, tsunamis were also observed in areas ranging from Kyushu to the Kanto region.

According to the Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred around 11:37 PM on the 2nd. Owing to this major earthquake, tsunami advisories were issued in regions such as Izu Islands, Ogasawara Islands, inland Boso in Chiba Prefecture, Shizuoka Prefecture, the Outer Sea of Aichi Prefecture, southern Mie Prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture, and Tokushima Prefecture. Following this, advisories were announced at 7 AM on the 3rd for the Miyako and Yaeyama regions and regions extending from Chiba Prefecture to Kyushu.

In addition, in southern Davao on Mindanao Island, walls of buildings have collapsed and other damage has occurred due to the earthquake on the 2nd. According to the local Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake is believed to be off Mindanao Island.

Information gathering and analysis are continuing primarily at sea regarding this earthquake, which also affected Japan. In preparation for any situation, residents are being urged to evacuate to high ground in areas where tsunami advisories have been issued.
